The One True God - Song Story
This is a remake of the classic hymn “Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise” (1876) which I used to play in a brass quintet. Walter Chalmers Smith based the lyrics on 1 Timothy 1:17, which says, “All honor and glory to God forever and ever! He is the eternal King, the unseen one who never dies; he alone is God. Amen.”
I think Smith’s word choices are awesome - there are some poetic lines that as a songwriter I wish I had written. Sadly, most churches don’t sing this hymn anymore. I gave it a simply melody (which will make the guys in the back rows happy) and a much needed chorus to give it a contemporary feel.
For a cup of good coffee I’ll share the story of what inspired the chorus of this song. But I will leave you with this… in this age of liberalism, tolerance, and relativism, I think it’s important to remind the Christian church that we serve the One True God.
